History
and names of Alaska
Pollack(Myeongtae) |
|
| |
According
to a legend, Alaska pollack
was named when the governor(Mr.
Min) of Hamgyeong-do during
the Joseon age(at about
Injo) went on the first
inspection to Myeongcheon-gun
and tried a fish there as
a side dish. The fish was
delicious. He asked for
the name of the fish, and
the locals answered that
the fish was first caught
by a fisherman with the
family name of Tae who lives
in Myeongcheon. The governor
named the fish myeongtae,
from the myeong from Myeongcheon
and tae from the fisherman's
family name.
This myeongtae has a lot
of nicknames depending on
how it is caught in different
areas. First, the one caught
with a drift gill net is
called geumultae, or mangtae(geumul
or mang means net), and
the one caught with a long
line is a naksitae(naksi
: fishing). The one caught
in the winter is called
a dongtae(dong : frozen)
and the one caught in the
spring in the months of
March or April is called
a chuntae(chun : spring).
One that is bony without
much flesh after laying
eggs is a kkeoktae(kkeok
: skinny), and one in Busan
is a aengchi. It is also
called various names in
different areas: bukeo,
seontae, waetae(biggest
ones), aegitae(babies),
makmultae(small one caught
at last, Hamnam), euneobaji(those
chasing sailfin sandfish
in the early winter), seoddalbaji(Hamnam),
deodeokbukeo(Seoul). As
much as it is common to
us, the names vary. |
